HORSE TRAINING… WORDS I'M SICK OF HEARING!
Hi,
Larry Trocha here.
Do you ever get sick of hearing or seeing something you know is B.S.?
I do.
For example… I CRINGE every time I hear the word NATURAL.
Natural horsemanship, natural hoof trimming, natural wormer, natural horse shoes, natural tail grower, natural joint supplements, natural this, natural that.
If it's natural… it must be GOOD, right?
If it's NOT natural… it must be BAD.
Frankly, I'm sick of it!
Especially when I hear somebody say something like… "I only use natural ________ (fill in the blank) with my horse. It's the only way."
In this day and age, it still surprises me that most people don't understand that the word "NATURAL" is simply used as a MARKETING TACTIC.
It's a marketing tactic used by people who want to sell their product. (yes, natural horsemanship is a "product"… nothing wrong with that).
It's an effective marketing tactic too as it gets plenty of people to buy.
When it comes to horses, most people simply don't understand… THERE IS NO SUCH THING as natural.
The mere act of handling or riding a horse in any way, shape or form is an UN-NATURAL act.
The only thing "natural" is the horse living wild and free with no human intervention.
There is no denying that fact. There's no argument capable of disproving it.
In reality, when we deal with horses, there is only plain, ole HORSEMANSHIP.
Horsemanship that either gets desirable results… or horsemanship that does NOT get desirable results.
It amazes me the number of emails I get from people claiming to be "natural horsemanship" trainers. They are usually asking for training advice.
It never dawns on them that LABELING themselves that way hurts their chances of getting help. Not only from me but from just about every QUALIFIED horse trainer in America.
Most good horsemen will bend over backwards to help somebody who wants to become a better "horsemen". But good horsemen get turned off by somebody calling themselves "natural"… because they see it as an un-truth… as B.S.
To most professional horse trainers, even mentioning the word "natural", congers up visions of those natural horsemanship clinics that have more in common with a "Renaissance Fair" than a horsemanship clinic.
I know some folks reading this are going to say, "Larry, you jerk, this is just your warped opinion".
Well, here's the "truth" test… Go to ANY horse function where there are PROFESSIONAL horse trainers and announce you're a "natural" trainer… and then wait to see the reaction you get.
I think you'll find the results interesting.
Okay, I'm done ranting and raving now.
I know I'll catch hell for writing about this topic but I did it to help folks understand the reality of it.
That's all for now.
Take care,
Larry Trocha
