Hello Larry, First of all I have purchased your foundation package as well as a couple other videos of yours, and they have helped my wife and I a ton! So thank you for that. I am in the process of starting a 2 year old, and have about 15 rides on him, and he is doing well. My question is, when we are loping circles, at this stage in the game, how important is it that he is in the correct lead? He is giving to the bit and starting to do a pretty good job of staying between my hands and legs, but he picks up the wrong lead more than half of the time, even when loping small circles… I understand to get the correct lead I need to have control of the hip, but we definitely are not that far along yet. Any thoughts??
    Thanks again!
    Nick

      Hi Nick,
No… with only 15 rides on the colt, leads are no big deal.

One tip… trot along side the fence, turn him into the fence and half-way through that turn, ask him to leave at a lope.

This will greatly improve the percentage of time he gets the correct lead.

    Larry,
Am thinking of purchasing your foundation package. Does this package teach neck reining or is that video to be purchased separately?

    R/s,

    Hello
I have started my 2 yr old colt these past 2 wks using your methods after watching your foundation training videos over and over again. I have about 5 rides on him thanks to the beautiful rainy weather here in Oregon. My question is should I push for the lope. I have group that follow CA that are saying that I should make him lope around the arena -and – another group saying that I should take my time. Don’t get rid of his willingness to come back to a stop. I have loped him but still need assistance from someonec with a whip on the ground. On my own it takes some big wacks on the butt with the reins to get him going. Just would like to hear your opinion

      Hi Jennifer,
The answer you are looking for will depend a lot on personal preference.

Personally, I’m never in a hurry to lope a colt that I’m just starting.
And when I do, it’s because the opportunity presented itself to happen easily.

My priority is to get the colt supple, controllable and willing to stop.

Thank you for your suggestion. I am well over 30 days and have let the lope come when he offers it. I have focused like you said on suppleness, willingness and having a great stop. While I have watched your foundstion video many times I have so far not have heard you address a problem that has come up. Mainly traveling at a trot in a counter clock wise circle he want to drop his shoulder in. When this happens I have been asking him to stop and make a small circle clockwise a couple of times and then continue on in my counter clockwise circle until he drops his shoulder to the inside. Then I repeat the clockwise circle. I am sorry if this is in your video – if it is please let me know and I will rewatch. If not am I on track or do you have a better solution. Thank you for your time and honesty.

    Hello Larry,

I have a 7 yr old mare I’ve had for two years. My daughter and I ride her on trails and my daughter runs barrels with her. On a practice night at the arena she didn’t want to give to the bit, which we have using on her all along. She then started rearing and fell back on me. I checked to see if her back was sore, if the cinch area was swollen or tender. Her teeth were floated 6 months ago. I am very hesitant on riding her or letting my daughter ride her. After watching and reading your pages, I realize we would need to claim our dominance over the mare, since she bullies us and our other horses from time to time. But how do we do that? Or is there other issues I need to address? Please help!?

I have a 4year old paint gelding who has excellent ground manners, works great in the round pen and with the bit and bareback pad, but once the saddle comes out it can be a rodeo. I don’t understand his reaction…I swing the saddle up and then take it off and do that many times, until I feel he’s feeling better about the idea of being saddled, (and I don’t want to start cinching up and have him run off with it not secure). That’s traumatic and dangerous. I have not yet ridden this horse, I tried just to mount him once, I stepped up into the saddle half way and then slid down and as I did that he started rearing and being weird. After, I assumed he needed more ground work and I have obliged. He’ll move away from pressure, back up, and flex his neck. He sometimes shakes and squats when I put the saddle on and take it off. Any suggested titles and advice for me? I won’t get on him until he’s safe with the saddle in the round pen and, again, I don’t understand his reaction to it…
    Please help!

    Hey!
I have been reading your newsletter for quite some time and was curious if you think the foundation starter package would be best for me? Let me give you some background info. I am getting a 5 year old paint gelding that has go man go and jet something or other in his background. He had 90 days as a three year old (or so I was told) and then left to sit. So basically I will be starting over. I don’t know the extinguish of his training either. I want to barrel race and just have him do local shows in the future so I would like a solid start to make him an all around horse. I am a rather small woman (5 feet and 115 lbs), but am a very experienced rider. However; I have never started my own horse so this is a start! If you could email me or call me that would be fantastic!
    Thanks,
    Kenzie
