Here are a few of the students I've taught at my training stable. Most of them had no experience in reining, cutting or working cow horse prior to entering my lesson program. I'm very proud of them for what they've accomplished.

Congratulations to Steve Litzky and Melissa Norris on your 2006 Hi-Point Awards. Good job.

  • Fiina Ugrin-Jolley
    Fiina Ugrin-Jolley
    Ft. Bragg, CA

Winner of the 2004 Non Pro Championship saddle of the NCCHA. She also won silver belt buckles for two other championships. She accomplished this after having a brain tumor removed a few months prior to show season.

Fiina also was the winner of the 2002 year-end Hi-Point Saddle for VCHA.

Fiina is a school teacher by profession and in the last three years has won numerous year-end and class championships. Great effort, Fiina. You really deserve credit.

  • Virginia Sorensen
    Sebastopol, CA

Winner of the 2001 year-end Hi-Point Saddle for VCHA. Virginia is a Western artist and didn't start learning to rein or cut until she was 62.

At age 65 Virginia won a cutting class. She also has competed at reining too. If Virginia can learn do all this at 65, maybe you can too!

  • Mary
    Mary Maxeiner
    Sebastopol, CA

Winner of the 2000 year-end Hi-Point Saddle for VCHA. Mary is the assistant District Attorney for Sonoma county. Mary rides with a very painful "bad back" but still prevailed to win the championship saddle and a few buckles too.

  • Rich
    Rich Farrar
    Redwood City, CA

Non-pro and Limited Reining Champion. Rich is a computer tech and in his first year of competition, won two reining championships and the Limited Working Cow Horse of the WCHA.

  • Kathy
    Kathleen Feickert
    Cotati, CA

Non-pro Working Cow Horse Champion. Also, top 5 year-end in Reining. Kathy won these titles her first year showing. A very fast learner, she does well in cutting competition too.

  • Lori
    Lori Frugoli
    Novato, CA

Top 5 year-end championship in Non-pro and Limited Working Cow Horse and Reining of the WCHA. Very good for Lori's first year.

  • Melanie
    Melanie Ferdinand
    Petaluma, CA

Top 5 year-end championship in Non-pro and Limited Working Cow Horse and Reining of the WCHA. Darn good for her first year. Melanie has also won a Championship Horse Trailer in Team Penning.

  • No Image
    Jim Eddings
    Athens, TX

Jim was a fast learner. He won a silver, class championship buckle the very first time he showed a cutting horse. His first show was also his last show. Said he wanted to quit while he was ahead :)

Jim owned World Champion Cutting Horse, Handle Bar Doc.

  • No Image
    Gary & Mickey Goodfried
    Flint, TX

They both placed in their very first cutting class after taking only 12 lessons. Very good students. They also own the NCHA Futurity Champion, Dainty's Playgirl.

    Stacey Powers
    Petaluma, CA

Stacey won second in a big reining class the very first time she showed a reining horse. She also won the very first time she showed a cutting horse. After that, she won several year-end championships in cutting.

    Lindsey Dutton
    Santa Rosa, CA

Perhaps the most naturally talented rider I've ever had as a student. At age 12 & 13 years old she won several championships.

Here are a few of my favorite horses that I've trained and shown.

  • "San Man Shorty", 2008 Cutting Futurity Finalist owned and shown by Larry Trocha

  • Cal Filly Bar owned by Sheila Smith. AQHA Superior Cutting Champion. When I was just getting started as a professional trainer, this mare was my first good horse. She got me to the winners circle in a lot of shows and put me on the map. After her show career, she was bred to Montana Doc and produced Millie Montana. I started Millie's training, then Joe Suiter went on to show her and win the NCHA Futurity.

  • Scootum Over Tesa owned by Tania Ugrin. WCHA Open Working Cow Horse Champion. This paint mare did well at the APHA shows also.

  • Freckle Olena owned by John Tollett. Reserve Champion Nevada Spectacular Futurity. This filly was one of the most solid futurity horses I've ever shown.

  • I'm An Alibi owned by Robert Dolcini. Finalist of two west coast futurities. I loved this filly. She was so graceful and moved like a ballerina. I'll always remember her because she put me in the finals of my very first aged events.

  • Handle Bars Fling owned by Jim Eddings. Finalist at several Texas Derbys and a Semi-Finalist in the NCHA Derby. Fling was maybe the most honest and reliable horse I've ever ridden. I really enjoyed showing her.

  • Nap O’Lena owned by Richard Farrar. WCHA Open Reining Champion. Nap was a very consistent and honest reining horse. He carried me and his owner to several championships.

  • Willy A Dell owned by Bill Bachelor. Champion of two Pacific coast Cutting Derbys and a finalist at several other aged events. This mare had a great personality. I could always count on her to do her best.

  • Home Remedy owned by Ken Earp. NCHA and PCCHA top ten world champion novice horse. He also was a finalist in two aged events.

  • Cal’s Condor owned by Pete Mattioli. Aged event finalist and multiple PCCHA Champion. I picked Condor out of a herd of 2-year-olds. He looked like a miniature Percheron but there was something about him I really liked.

  • Mollie Montana owned by Sheila Smith. Pacific Coast Cutting Stakes Classic Champion. This mare is the full sister to Millie Montana, NCHA Futurity Champion.

Very interesting Larry,I see a number of your sucessful horses and students are female, you get double accolades for that kind of success. I am an older female new to reining/cutting, so what you shared in this article means a lot to me in my pursuit. Ultimately I hope to get some one on one instruction from you in the future and I am always watching your sale horses. Sincerly, Maree T

Dear Mr. Trocha:
I wrote you before, via your email. But I am sure you are so busy that it was screened and 86'd.

Anyway, I am an experienced rider (35 yrs) but want to train under you. I have never had a trainer, and took my TB to the Del Mar National Horse Show, where I won the Amateur/Owner Western Pleasure Championship. At age 17. I showed successfully for years, using what I saw others doing, to train my own horses.

But now I own the best horse ever, and with his breeding, am looking for either an apprenticeship or assistant trainer position. I will muck stalls, feed, water, blanket, turnout, whatever you need to accomplish my goal of being one of your students. I have worked for (summers off from college) Lee Garner Cutting Horses, and worked 7 days a week, loping, tacking up, cooling, washing, everything Mr. Lee wanted. I loved it.

I have a Continental King grandson, Continental Candyman, whom I broke myself and have had for two years – but he has so much potential, I need to give him a real job!

Please, let me know if you need me. I am mature, educated, open to learning much more, dependable, clean and sober 27 yrs, physically fit, and the hardest working student you'll ever have.

I have a stellar resume and references, and would love to speak with you about any possibilities you need.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Moore

@STEPHANIE MOORE: Hi Stephanie. Thank you for your generous offer. I'm sure you would be a good apprentice. However, I simply don't need anybody right now. I do all the training myself and I already have a groom and loper.

If you are looking for a job, there are plenty of top cutting trainers out here who regularly need help. You should start contacting them. NCHACutting.com has a list.

Take care,

Larry T.
