Cutting & Reining Horse Trainer,
Larry Trocha

Hi – I'm Larry Trocha.

Over many years working with cutting, reining and working cow horses, I've developed a successful training program designed to teach horses to stop, spin, rollback, change leads and work cattle.

I am happy to share this specialized knowledge with you through my series of Horse Training DVDs and FREE Horse Training Tips Insider.

horse training stop

In this clip, reining & cutting horse trainer, Larry Trocha shows what cues the rider needs to use to ask a horse for a light, balanced stop & back up.

Special attention is given to how the rider should use his hands, legs and seat to get a good response from the horse.

The clip was taken from Larry's training DVD, Western Riding Know How.

New to your newsletter and have found it very informative. You seem to add those sutle little tricks that seems to be left out in a lot of "trainer advice", that really makes a difference. Love your "politically correct" advice you sent regarding your new behavior problems course. Think you are right on for whatever my opinion is worth.

Perhaps i haven't seen it because i am new but is there any good way to deal with herd bound mare. She is great except often is difficult when leaving her stall mates or a group of horses.

@Theresa Crews: Hi Theresa. The "cutting" has nothing to do with it.

You need to learn basic horsemanship skills.

I would recommend my online course titled, "Groom, Saddle, Ride & Fix".

You'll find it here:

Hi Larry,
How much do you charge to train a 5yr. old mare that has already had a year of reined cow horse training with Roy Rich? How long would it take to finish her? Could you tell me if you think this horse has good bloodlines? Her Sire: Chics magic potion by smart chic olena Dam: Sheiks true which is a skipper w line.

Thank you,
Cindy

Hello Larry, I love receiving your training tips and your dvd's. I have a question, I am a barrel racer and one of my lightly raced geldings is not wanting to run. He enters the arena fine and runs but not to his ability and he is getting cranky about it, pinning his ears, swishing his tail when asked to move on. He has been cleared by the vet, no teeth issues. I dont use spurs when I race, only over and under. I gave him couple months off brought him back he is slower and crankier. He is starting to pee me off esp with the attitude. Also this horse has ran some decent times previously and ran for me up until this spring. Thanks for reading my email any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Angie Slone

@Angie Slone: Hi Angie. This is one of those situations where I could be more accurate if I could see the horse run.

Anyway, here are some of my thoughts.

Don't take the vet's word as the gospel truth.

Vets make mistakes and to tell you the truth, there are many, many vets who find it difficult to diagnose a problem like yours.

I'd get a second opinion from a performance horse vet.

I'd also have a QUALIFIED chiropractor work on the horse.

I'd also make sure the shoeing was right.

Contact your local professional trainers and find out who they rely on for the above services.

Also, too much whipping will make some horse's actually run SLOWER.
Your horse may just be getting sour and you'll need to give him more variety.

Hi Larry!

Thanks for being out there . I really enjoy reading your newsletters and watching your videos.
I have a question about spurs.
How are you using them?, I mean should every move with my leg go by the spur or should the spur only been used if the horse does not respond?
How long shank should a spur have?

Take care
/ Uffe
