In this clip, reining & cutting horse trainer, Larry Trocha shows what cues the rider needs to use to ask a horse for a light, balanced stop & back up.
Special attention is given to how the rider should use his hands, legs and seat to get a good response from the horse.

Hi Larry
I want to thank you for being so interested in helping us with our horses. I truly can not believe that you offer so much info for nothing. I feel you do it out of love for horses. Horse people of the world have been blessed. I have a quarter horse that was given to me about five months ago. She is a three year old never ridden. I am working on getting confidence back as it has been years sense I have done any work with horses. I think that age has taken its toll and now I worry about getting hurt, not so much for myself but my wife. I also have three mustangs from the BLM and an walking horse. So you see I have a lot going on and if I succeed it will be because of your letters and videos. I love horses for this reason I have them. Most people call me crazy because I am feeding six horses and have been for almost five years without riding any of them. After watching your videos I may be able to do something. Thank you for all you do. C. J. Moore
Hello!
I wish a very happy new year and I'm looking forward to another year of great horse training tips. One of the very recent newsletters had very much of my attention because it could have been my horse you described in it. I never corrected my horse within the show arena and was awarded with exactly the problem you described: My horse knows inside these four walls I won't do anything to him. Well, after reading it I finally realized why my horse was always doing what he did. Your tip helped me realizing my problem and working on it… Now I'm looking forward to the upcoming season and to see how the work pays off.
Thank you so much for all the insights
Greetings from Bavaria
Sabrina
Hi i real enjoy your news letters. They have helped a lot.I have a little badger breeding gelding that i have been working with in team penning .Hes very head strong and likes to go as fast as he can at every thing very high geared. He pulls at the bit and tosses his head . When hes working hes better but were not working all the time.I TRIED holding his rains tight down on the horn and giving slack when he gives to the bit but hes vary head strong and still he will continue to fight his bit and me .I hope you can give me some advice on this. This guy is very cowy i don't want to ruin him if i hav'nt already.
Hi Larry,
I purchased a 17year old very experianced horse in august 2011. I ride her in the indoor and out door arena and she listens great and stops on a dime, and will even back up for me. She neck reins perfect, I am just using a simple grazing bit. Recently she started pulling atitude and rears on me when she is heading back to the barn after trail rides or any riding and I try to stop her. Example when I am trying to walk her past the gate she starts bucking and gets a mind of her own. When I try to walker past ware I feed and sadle her, she goes into a stubbron ass and won't lisen to any of my cues. So I guess what I am saying it seems like she does great until she feels she is done and wants to go back! Stoping is unquestionable because when I try she starts jumping and ends up rearing! If I try to turn her she fights it and starts spinning me into trees, gates, etc. She does not. I get off of her and walk her back. But regardless how she gets there she is still winning because she is getting her way. The other day I lead her back to another arena and made her work more after she pulled that she was fine. Until I was walking towards the tie ups ware she gets saddled and feed. And she sped up practicly ran over everything inher way and took the shortest raout to the tie post! So need less to say I was embaraced and she did not get any grain after that session and i have no been out in s days to ride her! I usualy go every 2! Fyi this horse likes to go go go and does have a hard time walking with out constant pressure pulling back on her reins and is very controlable in the arenas with no issues yet! Please help.
larry let me first tell you that i greatly value you tips and videos and appreciate that you give freely of your knowledge. My wife and i love to ride and want to extend this to our family. We have five horses, all of which have certain bad habits. I see often that you say to discipline the horse and i know they need it, but i dont know exactly how to do it. Do i whip the ass while in the saddle? slap their neck? Recently my wife tried to ride a mare that we recently bought, we had ridden her the two previous weekends with no major problems. She became beligerant before we got off the property so i got on her, tried to make her circle and she began to rear. I got off and grabbed a stout stick and when she reared i cracked her between the ears, as i had heard to do for rearing. This only seemed to make the situation worse, as she continued to rear and i continued to crack untill she came over. I wasnt hurt but she continues to be a bitch in the round pen and to the other horses. just need to know exactly HOW to discipline.
Thank you for the helpful hints. I hang on to your emails for referencing later. I'm self employed and money is real tight right now. I make show ribbons and sashes and its been hard feeding my horses. Had 3, just sold 1 in Dec. to get by for now. When work is more steady I'm going to look into some of your videos. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Larry!
I have been receiving your newsletters and I'm love, love loving them! Keep'em coming!
I have a horse that has lost all respect for me, I'm an aggressive rider, and don't feel like I let him get away with his crap. But never the less it has happened. He tries to bite, kick, runs from me, and is now starting to rear. He is the herd leader as well and is a real butthole to the other horses. Right now I don't have a controlled environment (arena/round pen) and our cattle corrals are too small, to try and address these behaviors. We live on and run cows on 800 acres of rocky, steep rugged juniper covered country. Not the best place to go to whipping and spurring him, I don't want to end up extremely injured. However this spring my husband is going to level out a spot for me to put in an arena. I'm wondering if in the meantime I should separate him from the herd as a form of discipline, any thoughts on this?
Mr Trocha: Since I rec'd your Martingale and DVD in Nov, I have been working on my guy. I set the Martingale up & started with the ground work on retraining to get supple and to flex @ the poll. I rode him today, what a surprise, we just jogged and did figure 8 and he droppped and gave his head – fantasic, Thank you, now I just have to get the feel of his mouth
Thank you again
I was out bringing my horses in, I grain Boss(19yr old gelding) with a supplement, my 4yr old mare, ranchmade came over wanting some of his grain and I a moved her off. She then came back over turned and tried to kick me. I mean backed up and tried to kick me! I was pissed so I pushed her off again. She then came back over and tried again. Boss put himself in between us and she quit. I didnt do anything to her but catch her put her in round pen. What do you do when a horse does that??? If it wasn't pitch black out I would have worked the heck out of her in the round pen. I now take a whip(with a baggie on the end of it) with me to feed. What do you recommend me do if this happens again? Thanks
Hi Larry,
